History and Culture

Named after the British Special Commissioner for Uganda Sir, Gerald Portal Fort Portal, Fort Portal Tourism City is an epitome of beauty at the Rwenzori Mountain Ranges in western Uganda. It is the Administrative center for both Kabarole district local Government and Tooro Kingdom.

The residents are predominantly the Batooro with a deep-rooted rich culture dating centuries. However, being a regional trade hub and a popular tourism destination, Fort-Portal has attracted a mixed cultural population composed of local and regional tribes as well as international visitors. The population is generally hospitable.
