Sports and Recreation in Fort Portal City
Sport plays a growing role in Fort Portal’s identity, and the City is home to Tooro United Football Club, nicknamed “The Roaring Lions” a top-flight side competing in Uganda’s StarTimes Premier League, giving the region a genuine footballing presence on the national stage. The club plays its home matches at Buhinga Stadium, a 5,000-capacity ground right here in Fort Portal.
Buhinga Stadium itself carries even bigger ambitions. It has been earmarked as one of the venues under consideration to help host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Uganda is co-hosting alongside Kenya and Tanzania. While the stadium’s redevelopment has faced delays over the years, momentum is building: in March 2026, the Toro Kingdom formally offered 50 acres of land to the national government to support construction of a modern sports facility for the wider Tooro sub-region. Kingdom leadership has also pushed for the project to go further than just a stadium, proposing a sports academy to help nurture local talent for the future.
As these plans move forward, Fort Portal is positioning itself not just as Uganda’s Tourism City, but as a rising hub for sport in the western region,one capable of hosting national and even continental competitions in the years ahead.

Education across Fort Portal City falls under the leadership of the City Education Officer, whose office keeps the sector running through three main pillars: rolling out and tracking government education policies and programs, offering technical and professional direction to schools and institutions citywide, and supervising sector heads to make sure everyone’s roles are being carried out properly.
Keeping Standards High: The Inspectorate
Standards across Fort Portal’s schools and learning institutions are safeguarded by the Inspector of Schools, who heads the Inspectorate arm of the department. Much of this role centers on support supervision working directly alongside teachers to help lift performance across our institutions, rather than simply auditing from a distance.
Education on the Ground: Our Divisions
Fort Portal City is organized into two administrative divisions, North and Central. Each division has its own designated officer responsible for overseeing education activities on the ground, reporting jointly to the City Education Officer and the Town Clerk.
