Works and Engineering

The Works and Engineering Department provides the technical backbone behind Fort Portal’s urban design, infrastructure improvement, and road network, planning, developing, and maintaining every piece of physical infrastructure the City needs to keep service delivery on track. The department is led by the City Engineer.

  • Planning, designing, and overseeing the construction, rehabilitation, upgrading, and routine maintenance of City roads, including road marking and signage
  • Planning, designing, and managing construction and maintenance of the City’s drainage systems
  • Overseeing traffic planning, street parking management, and street lighting across the City
  • Planning and managing public transportation, while monitoring traffic patterns and proposing improvements
  • Managing the construction and upkeep of City building infrastructure
  • Offering technical guidance on contractual matters relating to bills of quantities for construction materials
  • Contracting professional firms to modernize the City’s infrastructure and road network for better accessibility
  • Developing and monitoring policies covering road walkways, flyovers, traffic signal junctions, major interchanges, and bridge construction and maintenance
  • Developing, reviewing, and updating the City’s Wider Transport Master Plan
  • Designing and implementing road safety strategies to reduce traffic-related casualties citywide
  • Compiling and analyzing transport and road safety data, and preparing related reports
