History of Fort Portal City

Fort Portal City has a rich historical and cultural heritage rooted in the history of the Tooro Kingdom and the wider Rwenzori region of western Uganda. The area developed as an important administrative, commercial and cultural centre and has over time evolved from a colonial-era administrative settlement into one of Uganda’s major urban centres.

The name Fort Portal is associated with the fort constructed in the area during the colonial period and named after Sir Gerald Portal, a British Commissioner who played an important role in Uganda’s colonial administration. The fort became an important administrative centre and contributed to the growth and development of the settlement.Tooro_Palace

Fort Portal also has a strong historical connection with the Tooro Kingdom, whose cultural institutions and leadership continue to play an important role in the identity and heritage of the area. The city serves as a major gateway to several important tourism destinations, including the Rwenzori Mountains, crater lakes, national parks and other natural and cultural attractions.

Over the years, Fort Portal expanded as a centre for trade, education, health services, agriculture, tourism and public administration. Its strategic location and fertile surrounding areas contributed to the growth of commercial agriculture, particularly tea, coffee, bananas and other agricultural products.

Administratively, Fort Portal developed from a town into a municipality and subsequently attained city status in 2020, becoming one of Uganda’s cities under the country’s urban development programme. The transition to city status strengthened its role as a regional centre for administration, commerce, investment, tourism and service delivery.

Today, Fort Portal City continues to grow as a green, sustainable and economically vibrant urban centre, while preserving its unique cultural heritage and natural environment. The City administration is committed to planned urban development, improved infrastructure, quality service delivery, environmental conservation, tourism promotion and inclusive socio-economic development.
