What This Department Does

• Develops the City’s Health Sub-program Strategic Plan
• Prepares annual departmental plans
• Coordinates stakeholders, including development partners, across every level of the City
• Oversees operational research and health-sector-specific studies within the City
• Monitors how health plans are implemented on the ground
• Mobilizes resources to support City health programs
• Promotes the welfare of health workers

City Health Department

Fort Portal City’s Health Department is led by the City Health Officer, whose office carries a broad mandate, overseeing how health services reach every resident and safeguarding public health across the City. This spans policy implementation and planning, human resource management, quality assurance, coordinating and integrating health services, controlling disease outbreaks and epidemics, monitoring and evaluating City health performance, advocating for stronger health services, and supporting research into local health systems.

To deliver the highest possible standard of health services to the people of Fort Portal, offering promotive, preventive, curative, palliative, and rehabilitative care at every level of the health system.

Health Services Across Our Divisions

Fort Portal City is made up of two administrative divisions, North and Central, each led by a Principal Medical Officer of Health carrying out responsibilities delegated by the City Health Officer. Every division reports back to the City Health Officer, who also carries out periodic support supervision visits to health facilities across both divisions. Currently, two officers coordinate health activities within these divisions on behalf of the City Health Officer and the Town Clerk.

• Infrastructure upgrades taking select Health Center IIs to Health Center III status
• Ongoing support supervision extended to health workers in both public and private facilities
