The Natural Resources and Environment Department is led by the City Natural Resources Officer, whose office carries out the policies, regulations, and Council bye-laws that guide how Fort Portal conserves and sustainably manages its natural resources, sanitation, and environment.

How We’re Organized
Under the Local Government Act, managing natural resources is a decentralized responsibility, meaning Fort Portal City, its divisions, the private sector, and individual citizens all share a role in planning and carrying out environmental programs. To deliver on this, the department is built around three sections: Environment, Physical Planning, and Land Management.
Our Environment Sector
The Environment sector safeguards Fort Portal’s natural resources, working to conserve them, monitor against depletion, and roll out environmental programs that support long-term, sustainable socio-economic growth.
What This Department Handles
- Offering technical advice on how natural resources are conserved and used
- Initiating and guiding Council on natural resource bye-laws and ordinances
- Providing technical support and extension services to the community and private sector on natural resource matters
- Reviewing development plans and technical proposals through environmental impact assessments
- Conducting research and generating data on the City’s natural resources
- Planning, implementing, and monitoring programs and projects that keep the City clean and well-managed, covering solid waste, water, sewerage, sanitation facilities, parks, and cemeteries
- Maintaining a clean, livable, and sustainable environment across Fort Portal
- Running public awareness and promotional campaigns on protecting and sustainably using natural resources
- Enforcing proper standards for refuse and waste disposal
